Chapter 15
Kyle
“Dude, what the hell was that?” The hushed and hurried question came from Campbell as we walked in front of Meisha, Liz, and Abbie on our way back to Abbie’s car from the Princess of the Seas at the end of the day.
When my eyes met his pale blue ones, they were wide with surprise and… ugh, delight. “What was what?” I asked because, apparently, all I knew how to do at the moment was playing dumb.
Campbell’s expression immediately turned from one of delighted surprise to annoyed knowingness. “Come on, man. You know exactly what I’m talking about.” He jutted his thumb unceremoniously over his shoulder to the boarding ramp behind us that we had just crossed and stepped off, where I had forgotten everyone and everything surrounding us once I saw those damn tears fall from Liz’s devastated gaze. “You and Liz had a moment back there and don’t you go denying it! I know what I saw, so don’t go playing your little mind tricks on me to change the subject.”
Damn, he was a quick learner. He had come to know me a little too well. For all that, though, I couldn’t blame him for it. I liked the guy, and I knew I could trust him with my life.
I sighed, grinding my teeth together to keep from snapping at his nosy, busybody ass. “I’m working it out,” was all I offered up. It was the closest I’d ever come to admitting to anyone or to myself that I might potentially have any sort of non-work-related feelings towards Liz.
Campbell gave me a meaningful look. “What the hell does that mean? Shouldn’t you both be working this out?” he asked, looking briefly over his shoulder to make sure that the girls weren’t listening in. When I looked back, along with him, I could tell that Liz and Stark were too engaged in their own conversation to pay much attention to ours. Meisha had already broken off from the group and had begun closing the distance between herself and her shiny new red Land Rover. I thought it suited her perfectly.
I turned my head back to glare at him. “If that’s the case, then don’t you and Stark have some things to work out of your own?” I asked, my brows raised, waiting for an answer.
Campbell rolled his eyes but didn’t push the subject. “Fine, whatever. Working relationships make things more complicated. I get it--”
“Yeah, I’m sure you do,” I snapped back, tired of all this damn relationship talk. “The bottom line is, it’s no one’s damn business what goes on between Liz and I, except for Liz and me.”
In his usual Campbell fashion, he eyed me from the corner of his gaze and said, “You and Liz. Hmm… Liz would actually have to be involved in the conversation for that to be accurate-” he began, but a single hard look from me had him shutting his big trap just in time for Liz and Stark to close the distance between our divided groups.
